Maryland Unemployment Rate Remains Among the Lowest In the Nation
BALTIMORE, MD (March 11, 2024) – The U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released state jobs and unemployment data today. According to the preliminary survey data, Maryland’s total jobs increased by 6,800 and the unemployment rate rose from a revised 2.2% in December to 2.3% in January. Maryland’s unemployment rate is currently the third best in the nation.
Sectors that created jobs include: the Public Sector (3,900); Leisure and Hospitality (2,900); Private Education and Health (1,700); Manufacturing (600); Financial Activities (100).
Sectors that experienced a decline include: Mining, Logging, and Construction (1,700); Other Services (600); Information (100).
The preliminary jobs estimate in December 2023 was revised upward by 800 jobs: from a loss of 3,800 to a decline of 3,000 jobs.
